Privacy policy
The short version: I collect your email address and, if you choose to give it, your first name. This site also uses analytics and advertising tools, but only if you accept them when you are asked. Here is the detail, in plain English.
What I collect
When you sign up for a free download or the AI Bytes newsletter, I collect your email address and an optional first name. Alongside that I record which guide you asked for, when you asked, when you confirmed, and the campaign tags in the link you arrived through, so I know which video sent you. I do not ask for anything else, and I never ask for payment details.
Separately from that, if you accept analytics and advertising when the banner asks, the tools named below collect the ordinary web measurement data: the pages you view, roughly where you are, your device and browser, the site that referred you, and your IP address. Two of them, Meta and LinkedIn, use that to build advertising profiles. If you choose Essential only, none of that happens and none of those tools load at all.
If you subscribed to my newsletter somewhere else first, for example on LinkedIn, I may have moved your email address and first name into this database so everything lives in one place. The same rules and the same unsubscribe apply.
How I use it
Your email address is used to deliver the download you asked for and to send you AI Bytes, my weekly newsletter, along with the occasional email about a new video or guide. Your first name, if you give it, is used to address you by name. I never sell or rent your details to anyone, and your email address is never handed to an advertising platform.
Newsletter emails include standard open and click reporting through Resend, the sending service, so I can tell which topics are worth writing more of. That reporting stays between me and Resend, it is never shared or used for advertising, and the unsubscribe link always works regardless.
Where your data lives
I run this myself rather than through a marketing platform. Your details are stored in my own database, hosted by Supabase in Sydney, Australia. Emails are delivered by Resend, an email service based in the United States that sends from servers in Tokyo, so your email address passes through their systems to reach you. The site itself runs on Vercel, in their Sydney region. Nobody else has access to your email address. If you accept analytics and advertising, the measurement data described above also goes to Google, Meta and LinkedIn, all of whom process it overseas, mainly in the United States, under their own privacy terms.
Cookies and tracking
The first time you visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics and advertising cookies. Nothing is loaded and no tracking cookie is set until you choose. The site works exactly the same either way, so choosing Essential only costs you nothing and I do not ask again.
If you choose Accept, three third party services load:
- Google Analytics 4, to see which pages and guides are actually useful. Google's privacy policy.
- Meta pixel, to measure which ads bring people here and to reach similar people. Meta's privacy policy.
- LinkedIn Insight Tag, for the same purpose on LinkedIn. LinkedIn's privacy policy.
Each of those sets its own cookies and receives your IP address. They are all advertising and analytics tools, and I am telling you so plainly rather than burying it. If you change your mind, clearing this site's data in your browser brings the banner back.
Your choice is remembered for twelve months in your browser's local storage, not in a cookie, so declining leaves nothing behind.
One page differs regardless of your choice: the thank you page shown right after you sign up can include a video, embedded through YouTube's privacy-enhanced player. Loading that page means your browser talks to YouTube, which is part of Google, under YouTube's own privacy terms. Watching it is entirely optional.
My own admin, the password protected pages I use to write the newsletter, loads one small script of mine and sets one sign in cookie. Neither ever touches a visitor.
Your choices
Every email includes a one click unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately. You can decline analytics and advertising at the banner, or clear this site's data in your browser to be asked again. Under the Australian Privacy Principles you can also ask me to show you the information I hold about you, correct it, or delete it entirely. Email me and I will do it myself, because there is no support queue to wait in.
